Титанът Атлас – скулптурата на покрива
Art Deco is an art and architectural movement that originated in France in the first half of the 20th century. In the following decades, it became popular internationally, including in Bulgaria. Since its inception, ATLAS House has become an emblem of the main street of Plovdiv.
The Titan Atlas – the sculpture on the roof
An emblematic element in the external architecture of ATLAS House is the statue of the Titan Atlas, located on its roof. The sculpture is thematic for this period. Titan Atlas, transformed into the emblem and name of the hotel and restaurant, is a hero from ancient mythology.
He is one of the Titans punished by Zeus to bear the sky on his shoulders due to his participation in the Titan uprising against the gods. He was assigned to support the sky to the West, near the gardens of the Hesperides. That’s why the ocean there got its name – the Atlantic Ocean.
The sculpture – the work of the Venetian woman from Plovdiv
The sculpture of Atlas, bearing the celestial sphere on his shoulders, is believed to be the work of Emilia Favretto-Subeva. She was an Italian who arrived in Bulgaria with her husband Atanas Subev, the founder of the first specialized school of trade and finance in Southern Bulgaria. The sculpture was restored by the renowned sculptor-restorer Nikola Stoyanov.
